A Six-Day Hindu Wedding at Royalton Riviera Cancún | Goral & Pratik

Goral and Pratik brought their family from half a world away to the Riviera Maya for a full Hindu wedding: six days of rituals, color and music at Royalton Riviera Cancún. Documenting something like this, from start to finish, was a gift. Here is their story.

The welcome and the mehndi

It all started on a rooftop terrace at the hotel, with hanging lights, a teepee set up against the sunset and the sea behind it. The mehndi started there too: the henna going up Goral’s hands in detail, while the drum played and the first couples got up to dance. The green, the gold and the warm light of that night set the tone for the whole week.

The haldi, full of laughter

The morning of the haldi was pure joy. Turmeric paste on the hands and faces of the bride and groom, marigold garlands, the whole family getting their hands in it, laughing. Of all the days, this is the one that feels the loosest and the happiest.

The Griha Shanti puja

Under the stone columns of the hotel, with the sea as a backdrop, an altar with a figure of Ganesh presided over the ceremony. Sacred fire, blessings, an exchange of sweets between the families: a quiet moment before the big day arrived.

The sangeet on the sand

When night fell the party moved to the beach, under a blue tent facing the sea. There were rehearsed choreographies, lehenga spins under the lights, a fire performance and a dance floor that kept pulling in every generation of the family. It was also the night of the most tender moments: hugs between mothers, daughters and grandmothers that are kept forever now.

The wedding day

The groom arrived in a baraat with colored smoke and drums. The ceremony was in a mandap facing the sea, dressed in white and dusty pink. There they completed the rituals, one after another: the sacred fire, the garments of the two of them tied together and the rounds around the fire, with the family close by, watching it all.

The reception

The last night was the gala night. An entrance with lights, a first dance with cold sparklers, a dance floor that did not empty until the music ran out and, in the middle of all of it, a lehenga spin in the garden at golden hour.

Thank you, Goral and Pratik, for letting me document such a full week, one that was so much yours. It was an honor.
