A Guide for Brides

10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

A short guide to choosing well and sleeping easy.

Your wedding happens once. The flowers wilt, the cake gets eaten, the dance floor empties. The only thing that lasts, forever, is the photos. That’s why choosing your photographer isn’t just another line item: it’s deciding who gets to keep the most important day of your story.

The problem is almost every photographer looks great on Instagram. A pretty portfolio won’t tell you how the day is actually going to go, what happens if something goes wrong, or when you’ll actually have your photos in hand. These 10 questions will. Ask them before you sign, and you’ll know exactly who you’re talking to within five minutes.

01

Can I see one full wedding, not just your best shots?

Anyone can put together a portfolio with 20 amazing shots pulled from 20 different weddings. What matters is seeing one full wedding, start to finish: getting ready, the ceremony, portraits, the dance floor. That’s where you see whether a photographer holds up all night, or just got lucky a couple of times.

02

How many weddings have you shot, and in how many different venues?

Experience doesn’t happen by accident. A photographer who’s already worked in a lot of venues knows how to read the light in a dark chapel, move around a backlit terrace, and handle rain without losing his cool. Ask about years in business, number of weddings, and variety of locations.

03

What happens if you get sick or have an emergency on my wedding day?

This is the question almost nobody asks, and the one that gives the most peace of mind. A professional has a network of trusted colleagues and a clear plan, so whatever happens, your wedding stays covered. If they don’t have an answer, that’s a red flag.

04

How do you back up my photos so they never get lost?

Memory cards fail. A serious photographer shoots to two cards at once during the event, and makes several backups afterward, on separate drives and in the cloud. Your memories can’t depend on a single card.

05

When and how will I actually receive my photos?

Ask for real dates, not “in a few months.” A good photographer gives you a sneak peek within days so you can share it while it’s fresh, and a clear date for the full gallery. Not knowing when your photos are coming kills the excitement.

06

How many photos do you deliver, and how do you edit them?

It’s not about quantity, it’s about judgment. Ask how many edited photos they deliver on average and, more importantly, what the edits actually look like. Their editing style is what’s going to live on your walls for the next 40 years. Make sure you love it today, because that’s how it’s going to look forever.

07

How do you direct people without it feeling stiff?

The best photos happen when you forget the camera is even there. Ask how they work: are they going to pose you all day, or do they know how to guide you loosely so you come across natural, comfortable, like yourself. That’s exactly where the difference between a stiff photo and one full of life comes from.

08

Do you visit the venue ahead of time, or coordinate with my wedding planner?

The details get handled beforehand, not on the wedding day itself. A photographer who coordinates with your planner, reviews the timeline, and knows the venue shows up on the day ready to work calmly, not to improvise.

09

What exactly is included in the price, and what costs extra?

Get everything in writing: hours of coverage, approximate number of photos, whether there’s a second shooter, whether the album is included or separate, whether travel costs are already in the price. Expensive surprises always show up later. Ask for clarity from the start.

10

Do you work with a contract?

No contract, no deal. The contract protects you: it puts the date, what’s included, the cancellation policy, and delivery times in writing. If a photographer doesn’t work with a contract, they’re not working like a professional.

One last thing

If asking these questions leaves you feeling like the person on the other end actually listens, answers clearly, and puts you at ease, you’ve already found something more valuable than a pretty portfolio: trust. And on the most important day of your life, trust is everything.

I’m Fernando Ruiz. I’ve spent over 10 years photographing weddings in León and across Mexico, for couples from here and from other countries. I love a documentary style with soft direction, so you forget the camera is there and just live your day.

If you’d like to talk about your wedding, no strings attached, I’d love to hear about it.
